Slash the Trash!

For more information, Visit the "Slash the Trash!" web page.

(2008-2009) “Slash the Trash” is a program designed to reduce garbage accumulation in Juneau’s streams and rivers. Working with the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), Alaska Departmetn of Fish & Game (ADF&G), U.S. Forest Service, Litter Free, Inc. and the City and Borough of Juneau, JWP is trying to find long term solutions to Juneau’s litter and garbage problems. Funding provided by the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation- “Alaska Clean Water Actions” Program (ACWA).

Montana Creek Stream Stewardship Project

The ‘Montana Creek Stream Stewardship Project’ was a year-long community education and stewardship program that promoted the health and wise use of Montana Creek. The long-term goal of this project is to improve water quality and preserve salmon habitat and wetland protection in Montana Creek.

Promoting Citizen-Based Salmon Habitat Protection

(2009-present) In order to achieve our goal of advocating for responsible and adaptive watershed management, JWP works with riparian landowners and the CBJ to promote salmon habitat and riparian buffer protection.  There are two main audiences we hope to reach with this work: (1) the riparian landowner and (2) the CBJ Wetlands Review Board, Planning Commission, and Planning Department.

Weeds in the Watershed

(2009-present) Working with the Juneau Cooperative Weed Management Area (JNU-CWMA), JWP provides staff time to support the development and implementation of an integrated invasive weed management plan for Juneau.

Get to Know Your Watershed: Vanderbilt Creek

(2007-2008) JWP hosted an informal “Get to know Vanderbilt Creek” meeting to share habitat functions, values, and degradation in Vanderbilt Creek watershed with local community residents and business owners. Vanderbilt Creek is located in the Lemon Creek valley, flowing into Gastineau Channel through one of Juneau’s main industrial and commercial areas. This valley is key to Juneau’s economic growth and development, and is home to several thousand Juneau residents, as well as salmon and other wildlife. Well-planned growth, development, and neighborhoods are all compatible with keeping our wild salmon streams clean and healthy. Funding provided by ADEC Alaska Clean Water Actions (ACWA) program.

"Salmon-Friendly" Snow Management

(2007-2008) To reduce pollution in our local salmon streams as a result of snow storage activities, JWP advocates ‘salmon-friendly’ snow management practices. We presented information and guidance to local property owners, businesses, the CBJ and the Alaska Department of Transportation and campaigned for the use of best management practices (BMP’s) for improved plowing and snow storage in Juneau. Funding provided by ADEC Alaska Clean Water Actions (ACWA) program.

Stormwater Managment in Juneau

For more information, Visit the Stormwater Management portion of our website.

(2007-2008) JWP partnered with the CBJ and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to advocate for best management practices (BMP’s) in local stormwater conveyances. Training for design and use of stormwater management BMPs was hosted by JWP, and user-friendly outreach materials for ‘salmon-friendly’ stormwater conveyances were created as part of this project. A JWP intern worked with the CBJ on an ongoing GIS mapping project of Juneau’s stormwater system, identifying stormwater outfalls in Juneau watersheds. The goal of this project was to provide the CBJ with stormwater information to help guide “smart” development on CBJ lands. Funding provided by ADEC Alaska Clean Water Actions (ACWA) program.
