2011 Summer Internship Opportunity for Research, Monitoring
and Assessment of Juneau’s Watersheds

Position Description: The Juneau Watershed Partnership (JWP) seeks an enthusiastic and dynamic summer intern to support our “Applied Research and Watershed Planning” program.

Organization Description: JWP works to promote community stewardship and sustainable use of our local watersheds.  Since 1998, JWP has led stream clean-up events, community field trips and local educational activities.  We collaborate with diverse partners to monitor water quality and general watershed health, and we bring local agencies and stakeholders together to work on local watershed planning issues.

Duration: Twelve weeks - starting in May or early June

Salary: $4,500 Stipend + Travel (Up to $1000)

Assignment: Our summer intern will contribute technical support and assistance to JWP staff on one or more of the following projects: Creating a watershed conservation plan for a planned housing development, creating a stormwater pollution mitigation plan for a local salmon stream, conducting monitoring and assessment of local invasive weed infestation, and gathering data and photos for a city-wide salmon habitat restoration plan.

Data-gathering activities associated with our research and conservation goals are well suited for a detail-oriented individual who enjoys working outdoors in a variety of conditions and terrain.

Responsibilities:
• Assisting our lead scientist with field missions including data-gathering and validation of existing on-the-ground information
• Field data collection (GPS, photo-documentation, basic stream/hydrology related measurements, debris surveys, and stormwater flow-direction observation)
• Maintaining a field notebook (to support field observations)
• Data entry (MS Excel)
• Providing program, office, field and event support to JWP staff and Board of Directors as needed.

Skills/Requirements:
• Background in environmental science, watershed ecology, biology, hydrology, fisheries, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), or natural history and knowledge of environmental and conservation issues.
• Interest in assessing and protecting water, water quality, fish and fisheries habitat.
• Excellent observation and recording skills; desire to learn new field and data-collection skills.
• Experience with the following programs is required: Microsoft Word and Excel.
• Experience with the following program is desired, but not necessary: Adobe Dreamweaver, Photoshop, GarTrip (or other GPS data download software), ArcGIS.
• Ability and desire to hike, bike, and work outdoors in inclement weather and varied terrain of southeast Alaska.
• Ability to work well independently and as a part of a team.
• Available to work occasionally on weekends or evenings.
